Speaker: David Stocks
Subject: Why do poor countries stay poor? The solution is simple but faces strong resistance
Time: 27 May 2026 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Summary:
Through work in Rotary, David became familiar with Malawi – a poor country in southern Africa. The Malawian people are just as intelligent and hard-working as Canadians. The country is beautiful and rich in many ways. However, Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Why?
By studying this question, David has learned how the accounting system for international trade has trapped poor countries in poverty by legal methods of lying, cheating, and immoral greed.
Biography:
David graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in Electrical Engineering. His career included service with the Army, IBM, several small businesses, and two large consulting companies.
David facilitates the development of long-term strategies for client organizations, including approaches for changing an organization from its current condition to its desired condition. He builds informed consensus in teams of people who are striving to achieve worthwhile outcomes.

A recent report from APU’s Executive Director, Memory Mdyetseni, included the following:
“APU has become more than a school; it is now a source of employment, dignity, and hope… making APU a home and a beacon for many Malawians.
Your generosity has brought smiles to countless faces. You have built opportunities, hope, and a brighter future for girls and families across Malawi. The school you helped build is still growing, still bearing fruit, and still changing lives every single day.
Thank you for believing in us, for walking this journey with us, and for making dreams possible. Together, we are shaping the future of Malawi one girl, one family, one community at a time.”
