THE UNEXPECTED BENEFITS OF CARBON FARMING

Regenerative organic agriculture goes beyond sustainable to improve soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness in farm systems. Importantly, regenerative practices also have huge potential to capture carbon from the atmosphere and store that carbon in the soil where it belongs.

In this Tedx talk, regenerative organic farmer Gillian Flies explains the carbon cycle, and why she and her husband gave up their corporate jobs to help heal the planet through regenerative farming. By incorporating no-till techniques like the use of tarps instead of tillage, they were surprised to find that not only could they sequester more carbon in their soil but also improve yields, decrease labor, and increase profits.

“If we can increase the amount of carbon we have stored in our soils around the world by just 0.4% per year, we could absorb all of the excess carbon we currently emit,” she explains.
