Kelp harvesting involves collecting seaweed from natural beds or farms using methods that balance productivity with environmental sustainability.

Methods of Harvesting

1. Shoreline Collection (Storm-Cast Kelp): After storms, kelp naturally detaches and washes ashore. This “storm-cast” kelp can be collected by hand without disturbing the marine ecosystem, making it an accessible and low-impact method for small-scale harvesters (Gulf of Maine).

2. Offshore Harvesting: Divers or small boats collect kelp directly from underwater beds. Typically, only the upper portions of the kelp are cut, leaving the holdfast intact to allow regrowth. This method requires skill and careful attention to avoid damaging the kelp forest (Gulf of Maine).

3. Mechanical Harvesting: Commercial operations may use boats equipped with cutters or harvesters to collect large quantities of kelp from the surface or just below the water. While efficient, this method can harm the ecosystem if not managed responsibly (Katy ISD).

4. Kelp Farming (Aquaculture): Kelp can be cultivated on ropes or other structures in the ocean. This controlled approach allows for predictable yields and reduces pressure on wild kelp forests, supporting sustainable production (Wikipedia).
