Values, Myths, Beliefs, Attitudes and Behaviour Contributing to the Planet Overshoot Predicament.
C.R. (Buzz) Nixon, charter member and past President of CACOR, penned this 11-page essay to explain how and why we had gotten to the point where we fond ourselves early in the 21st century.
He began by describing our predicament: we’re destroying the sustainability of our ecosphere and endangering our own survival; we’re using up our resources; we’re converting farmlands to nonproductive places; we’re sending other species into extinction; and we’re creating wastes faster than they can be absorbed or recycled by the ecosphere.
[This is seen by many people, of course, as progress. Ed.]
Early on, he made his way to the fact that in a system that is not protecting the rights of collective, there can be no protection of individual rights.
[Again, this is seen by many as normal. Ed.]
In controversial fashion, he explored the role of religion in our self deceptions.
In concluding, Buzz stated that we needed to start using our big brains for deliberate, conscious, holistic thinking using hard facts and analysis rather than invalid beliefs. If past local collapses aren’t sufficient as lessons, one has only to look at the disaster unfolding in Haiti to understand what will happen if we don’t.
