From its simple beginnings in 1993 at Laurel Springs School, distance learning has transformed the educational options for millions of children, teens and young adults. Distance Learning is now serving students across the globe, including Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and Latin America. UNICEF estimates that by 2030, approximately 3.5 billion children could be connected to digital solutions including personalized learning
This flexible mode of delivery can be successfully delivered by computers, tablets, and smart phones When combined with socio-emotional methodologies, distance learning has the potential to help mitigate the dire needs of 263 million children who suffer from a lack of education.
During this presentation, we will examine the origins and exponential growth of distance learning, and explore models for providing the world’s children with equal access to learning.
Bio:
Marilyn Mosley Gordanier founded Laurel Springs School in 1991. Laurel Springs was the first online school in the United States and has since become the largest provider of personalized online education, serving over 85,000 students in grades K through 12. In 1995, Marilyn Mosley Gordanier co-founded Mother of Divine Grace, a Catholic distance education school that serves over 8,000 students per year. In 2001, she co-founded Eikoh Web Internet High School, the first distance-learning program in Tokyo, Japan and Laurel Springs/C2 Korea, the first online learning program in South Korea. She serves as board chair for Educate Girls Now, educational chair for the Ted Turner Foundation, Secure Beginning, and board member of USA COR and an Associate Member of the Club of Rome.
