Who Is the Idealist? Julian Simon and Albert Gore Can’t Both Be Right.
In April 1994, Dr. Digby McLaren, former President of the Royal Society of Canada and a CACOR director at the time, gave this lecture to the Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary. It includes a wide-ranging review of our society, including its recent history, and its effects on the Earth, plus a brief exploration of economics. Dr. McLaren and saw that continuing battles between economists and ecologists were dangerous for the survival of humanity. He said, “…we are now faced with a task that is more difficult than anything we have ever contemplated: to decide how we may continue to live on this small planet. [If] we depart from ecological balance to the extent that we destroy most of the remaining life on Earth, then, surely we are dooming ourselves to a similar fate.”
