1994 Series 1 Number 10 Page 1
In April 1994, Dr. Digby McLaren, former President of the Royal Society of Canada and a CACOR director at the time, gave this lecture to the Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary. It includes a wide-ranging review of our society, including its recent history, and its effects on the Earth, plus a brief exploration of economics. Dr. McLaren and saw that continuing battles between economists and ecologists were dangerous for the survival of humanity. He said, “…we are now faced with a task that is more difficult than anything we have ever contemplated: to decide how we may continue to live on this small planet. For if we depart from ecological balance to the extent that we destroy most of the remaining life on Earth, then, surely we are dooming ourselves to a similar fate.”
