Impact of the Development of Knowledge on Questions of Morality.
Dr. Jerzy Wojciechowski’s five-page essay (including a question and answer exchange) was presented to the AGM of Moral Re-Armament, which was dissolved in 2001.
He started be revealing that scientific knowledge had grown by more than 1,000 times in the 20th century. However, that growth in knowledge had been unbalanced according to him. Largely, it had been about ways to measure and manipulate. There had been precious little attention paid to determine what we ought to be doing, how to act, and how to behave in life. As a result, effectively, we have become less able to differentiate right from wrong.
A major problem in complex modern society, achieved via science and engineering, is that the moral rules that were adequate for many centuries were not developed with the complexities of modernity in mind and are, thus, insufficient. Certainly, they cannot tell us how to deal with problems related to overpopulation and widespread environmental destruction.
Interestingly, in a question and answer period, Dr. Wojciechowski said, “If humanity won’t take its eye off the buck, it will perish by the buck.”
