Tariffs are increasingly being used to affect economics via imports and exports. Can they be used to improve environmental sustainability via impact on specific sectors, extraction or consumption of environmental products and services?

Tariffs and the Global Environment Effects

The impact of tariffs on the global environment is multifaceted. While tariffs can lead to increased energy consumption and higher emissions due to the relocation of energy-intensive industries domestically, they also have the potential to reduce international transport emissions by encouraging local production and reducing supply chain risks. However, the benefits of these tariffs are often offset by higher energy intensity and reliance on fossil fuels.
The U.S. tariffs have been described as one of the most significant economic events in recent times, with potential impacts on sustainability, net-zero emissions, and global temperature alignment. These tariffs could disrupt the transition toward net-zero emissions and may hinder the deployment of clean energy technologies.
In the long term, the U.S. reliance on fossil fuels and the potential for higher emissions due to increased domestic energy use could have a detrimental effect on global sustainability efforts. The trade tensions and tariffs have also raised concerns about the environmental impacts of the U.S. trade war with China, which has seen tariffs soar above 100%.
Overall, the impact of tariffs on the global environment is complex and requires careful consideration of both the immediate and long-term effects on sustainability and climate action.

In the past, govermments ave primarily used tariffs to protect their own industries from damage, notably to prevent dumping .  Tariffs have also been used as means to extract money from others, notably from their own industries and consumers as well as to punish those they do not want to sell to their markets.  Do less cows preserve the envvironment or do tariffs just shift the impact to other ecosystems?
