High Seas Treaty enters into force – January 2026

The strategic nature of the seas for life, transport, protection and world stability are now at the forefront of negotiations over wellbeing for all – the environment, the creatures who live there and those who share what is provided by these ecosystems, including to societies and economies.
On 17 January 2026, the High Seas Treaty will officially enter into force. Adopted in June 2023 and applying to more than two-thirds of the ocean, the agreement marks a major victory for the ocean.
