Note by the author: The editor asked authors to start from inadequacies in neoliberal growth-based economics and suggest an alternative paradigm consistent with the current state of the world. Here’s my attempt—after describing crucial flaws in mainstream economics I propose (beginning on p.109) a potentially viable alternative, one that conceives of the economy as a cultural component of a regenerative human ecological niche and contributes to the functional integrity of supportive ecosystems. Its spatial form is a system of quasi-independent self-reliant land-based eco-regions fueled by genuinely renewable energy, including human and animal labour.
