Genuine Progress and Well-Being Indicators.
Fred Thompson wrote the four-page essay to identify and describe a new approach to determining a nation’s progress, and the well-being of its citizens, as an alternative to gross domestic product (GDP).
He mentioned Joe Jordan’s private member’s bill that went to the House of Commons and credited Mike Nickerson (still a CACOR member in 2025) for his pioneering work on this concept. The proposed legislation has was never approved by Parliament.
He reviewed work on this issue by nearly twenty organizations in Canada and elsewhere. Despite so many organizations working on the matter, looking at well-being was not a common methodology. [That remains true and is, perhaps, one of the reasons why so many people live precarious lives. Ed.]

[I discovered an interesting recent (2024) paper on well-being measurement that may be of interest (see link below). Ed.]

[That paper mentions a Quality of Life Strategy by the Treasury Board of Canada (see links below). That strategy appears to have gotten very little attention–I certainly was not aware of its existence, perhaps because it was overshadowed by the SARS2 pandemic. Ed.]
