Topic: The Millennium Seed Bank Partnership–safeguarding wild plants for our future.

Time: May 11, 2022 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Summary:

The Millennium Seed Bank run by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew has shown the global value of seed-banking of wild plants, both as a safeguard against extinction of species, but also as a resource of material and knowledge needed to urgently restore and create nature-rich habitats for our future.  Michael Way will show how the simple concept of seed-saving can play such a significant role in combatting the ongoing loss of biodiversity, and in developing nature-based solutions to the climate crisis, by applying latest research findings and by cooperating with partners around the world.

Biography:

Michael Way is an ecologist at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew specializing in the conservation of plants through seed banking, with a particular interest in sampling strategies, and the integration of conservation approaches across botanic gardens, gene-banks, and landscapes.  Michael is qualified in Applied and Environmental Biology from the University of York, UK, and has field experience primarily from UK and from the Americas.  He is currently responsible for Kew’s seed conservation partnerships in North and South America including projects in Mexico, Peru, and Colombia.
