Summary:
Because our global economy hasn’t chosen sustainable (or, as Dennis Meadows now calls it, survivable) development, we have continued developing unsustainably. By extension, if we don’t consciously choose to educate for development that is sustainable, by default we are educating for unsustainability. “Greening the heart of education” is short for transformative sustainability education. It means changing what and how we teach to match the urgency of the climate change emergency and other environmental and social justice crises, providing the young people in our care with the education — the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind and heart — they will need in order to create the best possible future within the degraded global biosphere they’re inheriting, and inviting Mother Nature to once again play a role in the education of her children.
Biography:
Julie Johnston is a climate change activist, teacher (mostly retired) and sustainability education consultant who works with educators around the world through GreenHeart Education, an organization dedicated to promoting transformative education for sustainability and greening the heart of education systems at all levels. Julie has a master’s degree in adult education with a focus on sustainability learning, and for the last eight years, she taught an introduction to sustainable development course to international students at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC. Julie believes that schools must become compassionate places (imagine still focusing on marks when we’re facing down extinction!), and that we need to help children rekindle their inherent love for the Earth and the rest of Nature, fast.
