Dr. Amir Hakami | The Buy-one-get-one-free of Climate Policy. | 2024-05-15 | CACOR Live

May 15 @ 13:30 - 15:30 EDT

Speaker: Dr. Amir Hakami

Topic: The Buy-one-get-one-free of Climate Policy.

Time: May 15, 2024 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Climate change and air pollution share many common drivers and sources. However, policies to address each are often developed independently and without coordination. Further, broad public support for aggressive decarbonization measures has been elusive in Canada, and long-term climate policies remain vulnerable to political fluctuations. This talk explores quantitative linkages between climate mitigation and air pollution and seeks to show the value of an expanded narrative around climate action that incorporates air pollution impacts on population health and environmental justice.

Amir Hakami is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. His expertise is in air quality modeling, and his research focus is on applications of models to inform air pollution decision-making. While widely recognized as a model developer, much of his work is placed at the interface of various disciplines such as atmospheric modeling, population health, environmental economics, and environmental justice.

Amir’s research has been funded by various public and private agencies and institutions such as NSERC, NFRF, Health Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Transport Canada, Health Effects Institute, American Petroleum Institute, World Resources Institute, among others. His postgraduate training includes a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and postdoctoral fellowship at California Institute of Technology. He has held various academic appointments including the Associate Dean of Research at the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton.
