Garth Mihalcheon | A Thinker’s Guide to Surviving the Anthropocene: Essential Tools for our Cognitive Toolkits | Nov 23, 2022 13:30 EST CACOR Zoom

November 23, 2022 @ 13:30 - 15:30 EST

Speaker: Garth Mihalcheon

Topic: A Thinker’s Guide to Surviving the Anthropocene: Essential Tools for our Cognitive Toolkits.

Time: Nov 23, 2022 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Summary:

As residents of the Anthropocene—the geological Age of Humans—we live in times of unprecedented novelty, ambiguity, and uncertainty.  As never before, the quality of our lives—and the lives of literally trillions of unborn humans—depends upon the quality of our thinking, judgement, and problem-solving skills.

Are our “thinkers’ toolkits”—those many rules-of-thumb, formal guidelines, decision-making frameworks, expert tricks of the trade, and snippets of advice—up to the challenge?  How can we improve our reasoning in the face of our historic existential challenges?  Rather than focus on what we think of the Anthropocene, this talk centers on how we can think more critically about the biases, errors, fallacies, illusions, and moral teachings that can sabotage our best judgement and threaten the survival of countless future generations.

Biography:

Garth is a musician, consultant, health care professional, and project manager, with a BSc in Psychology and MBA in Marketing and Strategic Planning.  He has held management positions in inpatient healthcare and telecommunications, where he was Project Lead for the development and launch of Internet services for Telus, Shaw Cable Systems, and Videotron.  His passion for philosophy and critical thinking was kindled as an Emergency Department crisis counsellor, where he witnessed how the quality of people’s thinking and judgement impacted the quality of their lives.
