Topic: The Value Crisis – Re-visioning What We Know
Speaker: Andrew Welch
Time: Sep 14, 2022 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Summary:
The amount of intellect and information represented by CACOR and its guest speakers is huge. Are the problems that we wrestle with really so intractable? Or are some of the answers hiding in plain sight?
Basing this talk on a substantial review of the content of 150 CACOR talks online and the recorded discussions they inspired, Andrew believes that the truth is out there. He will introduce his unique values framework, with the following objectives:
1. Derive some rational conclusions from what we already know
2. Propose a powerful paradigm to explain why we got to where we are
3. Use those to suggest what might come next, and what we might do to survive as a species
Bio:
Andrew Welch is a relatively new CACOR member, who doesn’t fit our standard profile. When he completed Grade 12 and started at the University of Waterloo as an Honours Math student, he believed that he would never write another essay again. So much for that; he was only there for two years. He has worked in medical laboratories, and as a computer systems analyst, an actor, an experiential educator, a theatrical set designer, a corporate facilitator, a standardized patient, a high angle rescue professional, and a software manager. He has never worked for any government, nor sat on any notable committee. He retired just before he turned 40, and still works harder than anyone he knows – now without pay. He developed renewable energy system monitoring software which is presently used on every continent (for free), and continues to volunteer as a near full-time Emergency Management Leader with the Canadian Red Cross, a Search and Rescue instructor, and as an world-class council-appointed official town crier. While good at lots of things, Andrew is not an expert in anything. That’s his super power. His first book, The Value Crisis, was published in 2014.
