Biography:

The Rev. Canon Jeff Golliher, Phd. is a cultural anthropologist and Episcopal priest, formerly of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Anglican Communion Office at the UN.  Today, he is Assisting Minister Provincial for Sacred Ecology for the Society of Saint Francis, Third Order.  He was among the authors of “Cultural and Spiritual Values of Biodiversity,” the UN’s vision statement for the Convention on Biological Diversity.  He is the editor and author of numerous articles and books, including Moving Through Fear and A Deeper Faith.

Summary

The United Nations has repeatedly warned Member States about catastrophic ecological and climate outcomes unless we transform how we live.  Soon after those warnings were first made, St Francis of Assisi was proclaimed by the church to be the “Patron Saint of Ecology”.  This discussion will examine how the Franciscan movement has challenged the assumptions of empire-building and ecological injustice from its beginning in the 1200’s and how it has the potential to continue that transformation today.
