Speaker: Andrew Welch
Topic: Our Second Chance–Changing Course and Solving the Value Crisis.
Time: Oct 18, 2023 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Summary:
Many solutions have been proposed for our global crises – one of the most recent and exciting being the Earth4All vision from the Club of Rome. Still, progress is not promising. Why? Society has not taken effective action because we choose not to. Choices are based on values, so the value crisis is at the core of our problems. This talk will explore some new ways of thinking about qualitative values, discuss how we need to profoundly redefine success, and introduce a novel idea of qualitative economics. Whether quantitative economists can grasp it or not, a renewed precedence of qualitative values has to be the foundation of any solution for the continuance of humanity.
Andrew Welch is a locally-celebrated thought leader, writer, and speaker. As a University of Waterloo Honours Math student, he believed that he would never write another essay again. Surprise! His first book was published in 2014. Even though reviewers described “The Value Crisis” as “dizzyingly well-researched”, it succeeded as an intentionally non-academic work, accessible to the average reader. The book, now in second edition, also anecdotally traces Andrew’s life as a systems analyst, actor, experiential educator, theatrical set designer, corporate facilitator, medical software specialist, high angle rescue professional, and world-class town crier. The diversity of his CV speaks to the fact that Andrew is not limited by blinders into seeing the world through just one lens or discipline. He retired at 40, and still works harder than anyone he knows – now without pay. The first book now has a sequel: “Our Second Chance”, published last year by an academic press – which makes him laugh.
