Summary:
Canada’s building codes have been foundational in ensuring that we are securely housed in durable dwellings. Increasingly, building codes are being looked to to reduce energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings. The 2020 National Building Code of Canada and the 2020 National Energy Code for Buildings introduced novel ways in which designers and builders can enhance energy performance. The 2025 version of these codes have further developed enhancement of energy performance and have introduced GHG reductions as a criterion. Mike will give an overview of the codes, how they are applied, legislated, used and enforced and how they could be employed to reduce GHG emissions while enhancing energy performance.
Biography:
Mike Fletcher (he/him) studied Food Science and Microbiology at the University of Guelph and after graduating went to work at Sleeman Brewery eventually becoming the brewmaster. He then went to work at related biologically-based industries including as production management in a citric acid plant and as a plant and engineering manager at a biofuels facility. Along the way he learned quite a bit about energy and twelve years ago went to work at the City of Ottawa in the conservation and energy management group. Six years later he moved over to be the technical lead in the climate change group at the City. In 2024 he retired from the City and joined the Sustainability Solutions Group worker cooperative where he advises organizations, most often municipalities, on climate change mitigation plans. Mike lives in Munster with his wife, daughter and dog in a house with 16kW of solar, battery storage, a ground source heat pump and no devices which burn fossil fuels on a regular basis.
