The following interview between Johan Rockström and Kevin Anderson, provides important updates about climate change. Rockström is famous for the seminal 2009 research ‘Planetary Boundaries: Exploring the Safe Operating Space for Humanity’. 2023, he is outlining the planetary boundaries we have already crossed and how tipping points and frameworks function within. He explains how “We are beginning to see tipping points occurring? Is the promise of future ‘carbon dioxide removal’ undermining emission reductions?” Kevin Anderson adds to the exchange, questioning “Is change driven top-down or bottom-up? The weak role of citizens’ assemblies in guiding mitigation policy. And a very controversial space, of bias, within mainstream science and academia towards the status quo, rather than real and rapid action on climate change.
The key highlight of the interview, contrary to mainstream media and belief, is when Johan Rockström explains why and how the Amazon rain forest has actually crossed a tipping point – from sink to source of CO2 emissions. Decades of land development and deforestation has turned the vast ecosystem (lungs of the world) on it’s head? Rockström also highlights the emerging threats to pine and birch forests in northern Europe, and such forests cannot be accounted as “carbon sinks” nor “carbon offsets” in the near future.
