India is home to a diverse range of forests—moist and dry tropical forests, temperate and subtropical montane forests, alpine forests and scrub forests. It is one of the 17 “megadiverse” countries and is home to 8% of the world’s known flora and fauna. From 2002 to 2022, India lost 393kha of humid primary forest, making up 18% of its total tree cover loss in the same time period. Total area of humid primary forest in India decreased by 3.9% in this time period. In India the peak fire season typically begins in mid-February and lasts around 14 weeks.
