My talk will follow the important messages scope of my book, A Leap to an Ecological Economy, and go farther, to encompass the most obvious things that could easily be done to great advantage, which include the goals of creating much new natural wealth and of maintaining full employment. Then there are the truly difficult changes needed in the economy that must be faced to avoid calamity, which are also vital steps toward a sustainable economy. One of these steps is never even discussed, and I shall challenge CACOR members to be the first in this! If time permits, I’ll add some really new ideas.
About the speaker:
Derek is a retired physicist, who has profited from several subsequent “careers”, the most important being seven years with the Global Issues Project (GIP), which he cofounded in 2005. The GIP gave all its members the consciousness that the crucial issues on the world are all interrelated. This experience and several contacts brought him to the conclusion by 2010 that climate change could not be addressed as long as the economy remains the traditional one of the last three+ centuries. By 2016, he was ready to describe the essential economic changes needed to address climate change and achieve sustainability.
