To understand:
1. The world is not black and white.
2. The friend of my friend is not always my friend. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend. The enemy of my friend is not always my enemy.
3. People are complex; they act based on values that are constantly in conflict.
4. We should judge actions, not people. Bad people sometimes do good things. Good people sometimes do bad things.
5. Everyone has their own motivations, and from their own perspective, everyone is right.
6. Our evaluation of an action is one thing when we know little — and another when we know a lot.
7. Sometimes only time gives us the correct judgment.
8. What we don’t know still exists and still affects us.
9. Things never go exactly as planned.
10. Choosing the lesser evil is a bad choice — but often we have to make it.
11. There is only one situation in which there is no choice — when your enemy stands before you, about to kill you. In all other cases, there is a choice.
12. If you don’t want to make a choice, others will make it for you.
13. No one will come and do for you what you must do yourself.
