1994 Series 1 Number 11 Page 6
Margaret Catley-Carlson, President of the Population Council (New York, NY, USA), gave a talk to the Foundation for International Training in June 1994. This article was based on that event. It has a focus on the human population explosion and how we might manage it. In particular, she pointed out various “sticky management issues” that had arisen: pronatalism, target-based coercion, whether to provide sex education, pharmaceutical companies’ behaviour, and funding (especially for development assistance). She said we have done better than Malthus predicted and can go on to create a better world.
[Of course, Malthus did not actually make predictions about the number of humans who can populate the planet, but that is another story. Ed.]
