CR (Buzz) Nixon labelled “sustainable development” an oxymoron. He felt the primary need was for a sustainable ecosphere, and that time and effort would be lost chasing an undefinable will-o-the-wisp “sustainable development.”
He outlined some main factors in the human predicament: denial, fear, desire, biological programming, and reliance on faith (in mankind, in technological progress, in free markets, and in leaders).
He felt we were in a desperate situation, perhaps a hopeless one, and that we could only escape it by: accepting the mess in which we find ourselves, coming to grips with the various problems (global warming, loss of biodiversity, food security, etc.), acknowledging the “sustainable development” is indeed a trap, and working on solutions.
He concluded that it was time to think the unthinkable and change the unchangeable.
