On December 17, 2019, Petro-Canada opened the westernmost stop on Canada’s Electric Highway™, completing its coast-to-coast network of electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers. Now one can charge up at sites in cities and towns from Victoria, BC to Stewiacke, NS.
Petro-Canada has the newest charging technology and the fastest available EV chargers. Its charging stations feature the following:
- DC fast charge
- Two connectors per charge
- Fast easy activation
- Text message notifications
Charging speeds reach between 4 km and 30 km of range per minute of charging. The EV fast chargers are DC fast chargers, also known as level 3 or 3+. The chargers will provide the two universal standard connectors – CCS & CHAdeMO. These chargers are currently capable of offering up to a 200kW charge, with future capability of up to 350kW on select sites. The EV fast charger works with any electric vehicle, as long as it is compatible with level 3 charging. For Tesla Model S and X owners, a CHAdeMO adaptor (available through the manufacturer and many Tesla authorized retail locations) is required to charge at Petro-Canada locations.
The EV fast chargers are currently free to use. While there are a variety of pricing tactics employed in North America today, Petro-Canada will be implementing time-based pricing for the use of its chargers in 2020.
