A CACOR scheduled Zoom meeting.
Topic: “Populism; Rebuilding the National Conversation”
Time: Feb 24, 2021 01:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Presenter: John Meyer, CACOR Member
Summary: “The polarization of national conversations around the world has reached extreme levels in many instances. How did we come to this? What are the fundamental issues and how do we once again begin talking to each other?”
His interest: I’m interested because I’ve always felt that the key to social issues was income polarization and per-capita income. The book “The Spirit Level” by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett really fleshed out this concept and gave it perspective. The national media are the custodians of the national conversation and for the past 40 years have been leaving out huge issues which badly need to be addressed. Democracy can’t survive with this limited level of conversation, constrained as it is by financial interests, either from an environmental point of view or a social one.
