On the scale of nations
An uncle of my late wife is represented as one of the figures on this Mulberry Harbour (vintage 1944), now moored in Portland Harbour, Dorset, England. H.G.F. (Boy) Male (1916-2012) commanded a Royal Navy tank landing craft that transported American Sherman tanks from Portland to Omaha Beach for D-Day, and made the same journey many more times during the following weeks.
On the scale of individuals
This poster from earlier in the Second World War may be found In the Portland Museum.
The question is pertinent today, when not just a few nations but a whole world is facing an
existential threat.
