The destruction of the South Mountain Caribou herd’s habitat by logging and the herd’s resulting rapid diminishment is the subject of this post. A contact of mine, Trevor Goward, has written me about the plight of the South Mountain Caribou in southern British Columbia. He has been busy: “I have to admit that the caribou campaign has more or less taken over my life of late.”
He has asked help getting signatures on a petition and action over the issue which, basically, is that loggers, in Southern British Columbia, are destroying the habitat for the South Mountain Caribou herd which, as a result, is facing extinction. Please sign the petition which is found here: Sign petition
To judge from the 1503 signatures (2017-03-20) already received, this issue appears to have considerable resonance for Canadians and I expect it will find a response in many Europeans as well. He asks for help in raising the issue and getting input from elsewhere. Please forward this post to all your contacts.
The group he’s spokesperson for has hired a lawyer who will shortly issue a legal petition with the federal government for a ‘protection order’ against logging near Wells Gray Park under Canada’s Species at Risk Act. When that happens, it’s likely there’ll be lots of media play in Canada, though perhaps not much political action. For this reason it would be very helpful to be in position to apply pressure through the petition.
After informing yourself, via the website and perhaps other Internet sources, it would also be helpful to write your Member of Parliament and, if you live in BC, your representative in the legislature.
