Speaker: Paul Beckwith
Topic: Global Tipping Points: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Time: May 29, 2024 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Summary:
The Good Tipping Points include renewables like solar PV and wind power, battery storage, electric cars, more public awareness on climate disruption, more government action on carbon pricing.
The Bad Tipping Points include most Earth System elements like Greenland and Antarctica glaciers, sea level rise acceleration, extreme weather events like heat waves leading to droughts, torrential rains leading to flooding, bad social cascades like climate extremes causing more immigration, leading to stresses on countries leading to far right wing governments.
The Ugly. Mostly the collapse of ocean currents like the AMOC. Would cascade to frozen Arctic and Europe, baking equator, shifting ITCZ causing monsoon failures, lack of food, more heat into Southern Hemisphere.
