Speaker: Dr. Trevor Hancock
Subject: The Wellbeing Society: A response to declining planetary health and increasing inequality
Time: 25 Sept 2024 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Summary:
We have surpassed the limits to growth, crossing six of nine planetary boundaries and exceeding the Earth’s biocapacity five-fold in Canada. Our current economic system, and the core values that underpin it, is not fit for purpose in the 21st century: Not only is it depleting natural capital and driving declining planetary health, it is also depleting social capital and driving deepening inequality. The World Health Organisation has called for the creation of “sustainable “well-being societies”, committed to achieving equitable health now and for future generations without breaching ecological limits”. What might this look like?
