Dr. Ruth Waldick | Is ‘going local’ the solution? Navigating climate adaptation in small, rural communities | 20 Nov 2024 @ 13:30 ET | CACOR Live

November 20 @ 13:30 - 16:30 EST

Speaker: Dr. Ruth Waldick

Topic: Is ‘going local’ the solution? Navigating climate adaptation in small, rural communities

Time: Nov 20, 2024 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Summary:

The literature is increasingly advocating for “bottom-up” and “community-led” climate adaptation. Yet, detailed analysis and evidence of this is sparse. This presentation takes a look at some of the realities of ‘local climate adaptation’ drawing specific examples from six years of collaborative work in a rural community (coastal B.C.).

Biography:

Ruth is an ecologist with a long record of research into the intersection of climate change, risk, the environment and knowledge co-production through community engagement. Since being recruited by the Policy Research Initiative (Privy Council Office) from academia in 2003, Ruth has led and supported federal, regional and community-led teams on issues of risk reduction and environmental sustainability. Climate change has been an overarching lens for her work since the beginning. Ruth left her government position and has been working with NGO’s and universities to develop strategies and build capacity for regional climate adaptation.
