Summary:
In 1970 the UNGA established 0.7% of GNP, or GNI, as rich nations’ target for Overseas Development Assistance. Very few countries have ever achieved it. Thirty years later, in the worried excitement about the arrival of 2000, the UN Millennium Summit established eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG), to be accomplished by 2015. Progress was irregular and ultimately unimpressive. In 2012, the UNSG called on 26+ ‘international leaders’ to advise him on a post-MDG agenda. Agenda 2030 – 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) – followed the MDG in 2016. Progress has been very uneven. Amid the non-stop ‘dire-dom’ of the 2023 UNGA; the UNSG stating: “Humanity has opened the gates to hell”, the world was asked to rescue the SDGs. Nearly eleven months into this year of universal, ‘unprecedentedness’, with the ever-present competition among development-focused organizations, rescue is unlikely, and a case for another set of goals….hard to make.
Biography:
Our speaker today is David Harries, a nuclear engineer who has worked in the public and private sectors as a senior military officer, consultant on personal and corporate security, and advisor and professor in heavy engineering, national development, humanitarian aid, post-conflict and post-disaster response and recovery, executive development in strategic foresight, and post-graduate university education. He is currently a Principal of the Security and Sustainability Guide, a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science engaged on its Existential Risks To Humanity project, a Board Member of the National Indigenous Women’s Entrepreneurship Ecosystem, and Member (former Chair; 2013-17) of Canadian Pugwash.
