Summary:
Over the last 15 years, the energy transition has accelerated dramatically across generation, storage, and electric vehicles. However, public perception of renewable energy lags significantly behind these engineering realities. This talk explores the current state of the transition and this resulting “perception gap”, arguing that the disconnect is driven by outdated narratives and recognizable rhetorical tools that manufacture doubt. Ultimately, the session highlights that data alone is not enough to shift public understanding; we must also recognize and educate about these rhetorical tactics to accurately communicate the true trajectory of the energy transition.
Biography:
Dr. Giordano Scarciotti is an Associate Professor in Control Theory at Imperial College London. His academic contributions have garnered international recognition, including the 2023 IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award. Within the scientific community, he holds several leadership roles, such as serving as the General Co-Chair for the upcoming 2029 European Control Conference. Beyond academia, he is a passionate science communicator, operating a YouTube channel dedicated to bridging the gap between advanced engineering concepts and public understanding.
