CACOR Live | Susan O’Donnell and M V Ramana | Nuclear Power in Canada: Prospects and Problems | 9 Sep 2026 at 13:30 EST

CACOR Members and Associates are invited to the following CACOR Live presentation
Speaker: Susan O’Donnell and M V Ramana
Subject: Nuclear Power in Canada: Prospects and Problems
Time: 9 Sept 2026 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Summary:
In June the government released a “Nuclear Energy Strategy for Canada” proposing construction of up to ten new large-scale reactors by “de-risking capital investment” with federal funding. This 2026 strategy was launched eight years after Canada’s small modular nuclear reactor “roadmap” that similarly proposed to “de-risk” the development of SMRs across the country. Although more than $4.5 billion in public funds have been spent, SMRs appear to have garnered almost no private sector investment and seem to have reached a dead end. The ten large-scale reactors proposed in the newer strategy would cost in the range of $100 to 200 billion. Who will pay those costs? Besides high costs, nuclear reactors also confront the risk of accidents and the unresolved challenge of dealing with the radioactive wastes produced.
