Summary:
The mounting alarm over Canada’s fossil fuel agenda assumes there will be long-term demand for the oil and gas the Carney government seems so determined to export. That was a questionable proposition before the deep disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. Now, the shift to renewables is accelerating, as energy-importing countries that are home to three-quarters of the world’s population look to a fossil-free future—motivated not by emissions, but by energy costs and security. The risk for Canada is a future of stranded assets if the government takes its own pro-sovereignty, anti-Alberta separatist playbook too seriously.

Mitchell Beer is publisher of The Energy Mix, a non-profit community news site and e-digest on energy and climate change. He traces his background in renewable energy and energy efficiency to 1977, in climate change to 1997, and has worked to connect climate solutions with audiences outside the immediate “bubble” of climate concern.
