Alison Woodley | We can’t wait! Delivering on Canada’s land and ocean protection commitments | CACOR Zoom Presentation 2023-01-25

January 25, 2023 @ 13:30 - 15:30 EST

Speaker: Alison Woodley

Topic: We can’t wait! Delivering on Canada’s land and ocean protection commitments

Time: Jan 25, 2023 13:30 Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Summary:

Canada has committed to protect at least 30% of our land and ocean by 2030 — more than doubling current protection levels over the next 7 years.  A 30% by 2030 global target was recently adopted by 196 countries at the Convention on Biological Diversity COP 15 in Montreal in December.  Ambitious action is urgently needed to address the interrelated crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.  Alison Woodley will share insights as to why this target is critically important, as well as a pathway to achieve 30 by 30 in Canada, based on CPAWS’ roadmap to 2030 report.

Biography:

Alison Woodley has worked for over two decades with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), championing ambitious conservation action in Canada.  She was an NGO member of the Canadian delegation to the recent Biodiversity COP 15 in Montreal, was recently appointed to the federal government’s new Nature Advisory Committee and was a member of the ministerial National Advisory Panel tasked with recommending how Canada could protect 17% of its land base by 2020.  Alison started her career working for Parks Canada in Fundy National Park, which sparked a lifelong passion and interest in parks and protected areas. She lives in Chelsea, Quebec, and is happiest outside enjoying nature in nearby Gatineau Park and other wild places around the world.
