This was a brief report to CACOR by Dr. R.B. (Rob) Hoffman and the members of CACOR’s Economic Project Group. It discussed the relevance and usefulness of mainstream economics. It outlined a dozen facts relevant to that evaluation, such as the first law of thermodynamics. It concluded, “After all is said and done, it is perhaps reasonable to conclude that economics is part of the problem and not part of the solution: the mainstream body of economic theory, which dominates the practice of economics and which is largely unchallenged in institutions that teach economics, provides rationalization for, and therefore legitimizes, those behaviours that have given rise to those global problems that we characterize as the problematique.”
