Summary:
The present Ontario electricity system has evolved based on a centralized supply model. Central planners, supply to the need. Today customers have little agency beyond turning down the lights and paying their bills. Historically, big, centralized generation was the cheapest option; and easy to finance.
The future will not be like the past. Renewables are more flexible, cheaper and our only option to reduce the cost of electricity, but ownership must and will change. Customers and communities are now able to take control of the electrons, jobs and profits in their communities; we all use electricity and can do so more cheaply.
