Caring About the Future–A Discussion.
Bob Fletcher, Chairperson of CACOR at the time, received a letter from member RW (Bob) Durie of Victoria, BC, that he felt should be featured in the Proceedings of CACOR. He asked for comments on the letter, one of which (by Dr. Alastair Taylor, professor emeritus at Queen’s U) was published along with Mr. Durie’s letter.
Mr. Durie’s letter was fascinating and one can hardly do it justice in a quick synopsis. He felt the topic could be expanded into a book! Suffice to say his comments and questions were profound. For example, he stated that aid programs to feed and provide healthcare are ultimately designed to lengthen lives, which must be balanced by family planning. So fewer children will be born so that more people can enjoy old age. [That seems a rather unusual viewpoint, but it does appear sound.] Among other things, Mr. Durie felt there ought to be more analysis of the consequences of government programs so that their consequences be better understood before embarking on efforts to change the world.
Dr. Taylor said he agreed with Mr. Durie on planning being about regret avoidance and acting to bring about stability [which one should note does not mean growth]. He added many other comments, including one about needing to match the Charter of Rights and Freedoms with a Charter of Responsibilities. [There is an interesting link to CACOR’s Charter of Climate Change Rights and Responsibilities (link below).]
