Many scientific sources have confirmed climate change is happening, it is because of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and it is destabilizing Earth’s climate. Canada is in the top ten countries for emissions and emissions per capita. We have a duty to do our fair share to reduce our emissions and help stabilize the climate. However, emissions vary greatly by province. CACOR contracted for stock-and-flow modelling of our emissions and how they could be reduced. Canada is unlikely to reach its Paris Agreement target, certainly not its new Nationally Determined Contribution, without reducing fossil fuel production. Getting to net-zero emissions is a remote possibility. Some provinces are likely to be able to make important contributions, but others—ones that produce oil and gas—are likely to be much less able to contribute without fundamental changes in their economies.
