China has signed three huge liquefied natural gas (LNG) deals with US exporter Venture Global LNG as the world’s second-biggest economy looks to secure long-term supplies amid soaring gas prices and domestic power shortages.
This will double China’s annual LNG import volumes. These deals will likely make China (now ~53 Gm³ LNG per year) the world’s largest volume buyer of LNG, surpassing Japan (~100 Gm³).
Rather than finding efficiencies and installing more alternative energy sources (which it has been doing, but not fast enough), China is falling back of fossil fuel use that will worsen the climate crisis.
