In 1992, CR (Buzz) Nixon reviewed United States Senator Al Gore’s Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit. Buzz found it a readable rendition of the mess humans have created on the planet. He said it was an outstanding book that should be read by all who care about the future of life on Earth. Buzz wondered what Mr. Gore might do as Vice-President of the USA, a post for which he was running at the time.
In the book, Mr. Gore outlined a five-point Global Marshall Plan to create a sustainable society:
- stabilizing the world human population
- developing environmentally appropriate technologies
- changing how we measure the impacts of our decisions
- negotiating a new generation of international agreements
- establishing a new cooperative plan to educate everyone about our environment
Of course, in the event, Mr. Gore went on to do much, and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, but he certainly never could do enough on his own to solve the world’ human development problems.
