Thailand has made substantial strides in green energy with the launch of a 24 MW project at Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen province. Spearheaded by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), this pioneering project melds solar and hydropower with energy storage solutions, marking a significant leap towards augmenting the country’s clean energy usage.
This venture, a collaboration between Thai and Chinese entities, ingeniously integrates floating solar panels, hydropower generation, and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This arrangement capitalizes on solar energy during the day and transitions to hydropower at night, guaranteeing an uninterrupted power supply.
The solar panels, occupying less than 1% of the dam’s surface, are designed to allow sufficient sunlight through, thus safeguarding the aquatic ecosystem. EGAT is committed to harmonizing energy production with environmental preservation at the dam.
As a cornerstone of EGAT’s expansive green energy strategy, the Ubol Ratana Dam project paves the way for 16 additional projects across nine dams, aiming to generate over 2,700 megawatts of power. By 2037, Thailand envisions sourcing over half its electricity from renewable resources, such as wind and solar energy.
These ventures leverage cutting-edge technology to accurately forecast weather patterns and adjust electricity production accordingly, ensuring a reliable power supply for consumers. This initiative not only fosters clean energy adoption but also stimulates job creation and improves living standards in Northeast Thailand.
Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, EGAT’s Deputy Governor, underscores the project’s role in securing a consistent supply of clean energy for Thailand. Liu Hongmei, the Chinese Consul General in Khon Kaen, commends the project’s beneficial impact on the local community in Northeast Thailand.
As Thailand moves towards diminishing carbon emissions and increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, initiatives like the Ubol Ratana Dam project exemplify the successful integration of diverse energy technologies. EGAT plans to launch 14 more similar projects nationwide, aiming to curb CO2 emissions and align with global energy trends.
The Ubol Ratana Dam project signals a shift towards more sustainable energy practices in Southeast Asia and beyond, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability while fostering economic and social growth.
