Where Is the Leading Edge?
In the spring of 1999, Dr. John Maskell had just taken over from Dr. Rennie Whitehead as editor of the CACOR Proceedings. This issue was his first, which he began with a quick review of some of the leading thinkers of the last half of the 20th century, such as Rachel Carson, Aurelio Peccei, Alexander King, Dennis Meadows, Maurice Strong, and Gro Harlem Brundtland. [All, of course, recognizable names among many in the field we commonly call “the environment.” Ed.]
In Dr. Maskell’s expressed view, their thinking was leading edge at first, but has now become accepted, though certainly not by all.
He saw leading edge thinkers as always having to defend their positions from those who benefit from the status quo. They also must continually use imagination to perceive desirable new directions–only then can they enlighten the populace and help change their world views for the better.
It was his hope that members of CACOR would continue to offer leading edge thinking in coming years.
