Growing as We Age.
Responsibility to Care for Each Other and the Earth.
While sorting papers and belongings in 2023, CACOR member David Dougherty chanced to come across the transcript of a sermon his mother had kept. The transcript had been saved, along with other momentos of her life.
The sermon was delivered by Reverend Brian Kopke of the First Unitarian Church of Ottawa in 1985.
Upon reading the document, David realized it had tremendous import regarding the current effort to combat climate change, as well as other elements of the polycrisis faced by humanity.
The sermon talks about what attitudes one can take to life, aging, and death. It highlights the importance of continuously being involved with the world around one. Reading between the lines, it is clear that the oft-used line about not being around long enough to worry about climate change is a morally bankrupt approach. This would be true even if the effects of climate change were not already being felt, which they are.
If you choose to read Reverend Kopke thoughts, they may well reinforce your approach to life. If not, those thoughts may well influence you to think differently about your life and preparation for death.
