Carnival Corp. Releases Renderings for New Barcelona Cruise Terminal designed to serve LNG cruise ships.
(3:30 p.m. EDT) — Carnival Corporation has released the first renderings of its new €30 million ($32.7 million) cruise terminal under construction in Barcelona, Spain.
Scheduled for completion by spring 2018, the terminal is designed to accommodate Carnival’s next-generation ships, powered by eco-friendly Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
Barcelona is the busiest cruise port in Europe, handling a record 2.7 million passengers in 2016. The city, capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, is a busy turnaround port thanks to its good international airport connections; it’s also popular with day visitors.
Passengers going ashore can wander along Barcelona’s famed Ramblas and view the unique architecture of Antoni Gaudi, including Park Guell and the unfinished basilica of the Sagrada Familia. Excursions take them further afield to Girona and to the Montserrat mountain range.
The new 12,500-square-meter (134,549-square-foot) terminal, designed by Catalan architects Batlle/Roig will operate in tandem with Carnival’s existing terminal at the port.
Ships from eight Carnival brands — AIDA Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises (U.K.), Princess Cruises and Seabourn — visit Barcelona throughout the year.
From next April, the terminal will host inaugural sailings of Carnival Horizon, and it will also be used by AIDAperla, one of the first cruise ships in the world to employ dual-fuel engines that can operate with LNG.
Carnival has seven LNG-powered ships on its order books, and the city of Barcelona has an air quality improvement plan in place to encourage the reduction of emissions from port activities.
“Our goal is to make travel for our guests as convenient, pleasant and easy as possible, and this new terminal is designed to meet and exceed guest expectations,” said Giora Israel, senior vice president of global port and destination development for Carnival Corporation. “The local architecture firm has done great work in designing a beautiful facility that will make Europe’s largest cruise port even better.”
Sixte Campbell, president of the Port of Barcelona Port Authority, added: “This terminal marks the culmination of years of partnership. Since the beginning of our relationship, Carnival Corporation has shown strong success in our port and city, and 10 years after the opening of the first terminal, this has materialized in a new facility for their cruise brands. Carnival Corporation has been a loyal partner to the Port of Barcelona, bringing passengers of different nationalities and generating a strong financial impact to our local economy.”
A study by the University of Barcelona showed that cruise activity contributes €475 million ($517.5 million) annually to the city’s GDP, and creates 7,518 jobs.
More than half the cruise passengers visiting the Port of Barcelona begin and end their journeys there, spending an average 2.6 days in the city at an outlay of €202 ($220) per person, per day.
