Summary:
Current actions and Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement remain insufficient to steer us away from critical climate tipping points. In this brief update, I will highlight recent research on climate and biodiversity, underscoring the urgent need for a deep, transformative shift in how humanity interacts with the planet. Without such change, an already challenging future risks becoming dangerously unstable. I will also reflect on the leadership of Pope Francis, who has powerfully called for a bold cultural revolution to care for our common home. His insights offer valuable guidance as we navigate the path forward in what many are calling the Great Transition.
Biography:
Dr. Tom McAuley has worked in water resources engineering for over 30 years, including 12 as a senior advisor with the International Joint Commission. He holds degrees in geological engineering, water resources, and a PhD in theology and ethics. Tom is passionate about how we’re shaping the planet’s future. His interests include spirituality, family, hiking, Bernard Lonergan, Earthkeeping, just futures, sustainable communities, and kayaking. He’s taught and spoken in both academic and interfaith settings, and during the pandemic, he created and taught the course Faith, Ethics, and the Anthropocene at St. Paul University. His recent work includes a piece on mindfulness published in Theoforum.
