About the presentation

The United Nations tells us we have just over a decade to avert ‘climate catastrophe.’ With a challenge so daunting and planetary in scope, what is the role for local action?

Robb Barnes will speak to the theory of change behind municipal advocacy organization Ecology Ottawa, and will situate this theoretical approach within the context of international climate talks and recent developments in political organizing. He will make the case that the practice of local ‘engagement organizing’ is essential for making tangible progress on environmental issues across all levels of government. He will also make the case that cities matter; that we cannot make Canada an environmental leader without first learning how to turn cities into green leaders.

This talk will also highlight important opportunities for near-term engagement, ranging from the federal election to municipal policy windows.
About the presenter

Robb Barnes is the Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa. Before joining Ecology Ottawa as a volunteer in 2013, Robb worked in the non-profit, public and private sectors. Robb brought advocacy experience to Ecology Ottawa from his time in politics and non-profits, and policy experience from his time as a management consultant working closely with various levels of government. Robb is passionate about environmental and animal welfare issues, community organizing and urban design. Robb holds a Masters in Public and International Affairs, where he focused on the intersection of ecological economics and urban sprawl.
